What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal Decompression Therapy relieves pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves. This is a nonsurgical procedure that effectively treats low back, neck, radiating leg & arm pain, and headaches. Decompression Therapy effectively relieves pain associated with disc herniation, degenerative discs, and posterior facet syndromes. It does so by reducing the pressure on spinal discs and facet joints through unloading created by distraction and positioning. Decompression Therapy effectively enhances the healing process and renders quick, effective and amazing pain relief. This treatment enables most patients to return to a more active lifestyle.
Spinal Decompression Treatments
A typical treatment session consists of approximately 15-30 minutes of decompression on the Chiropractic Decompression Table. The Decompression process is comfortable and safe. It is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during treatment.
The task of relieving pain comes about as a result of drawing areas of herniated disc back into place. Decompression achieves this by creating negative pressure within the disc, referred to as negative intra-discal pressure. This creates essentially a vacuum to draw the bulging and herniated disc material back into the disc space and relieves pressure. As the ligaments that hold disc material in place become stretched or torn due to bulging and herniation, decompression strengthens the ligament bands that hold the disc material in place to heal and prevent future recurrence.
